Oblong Hairstyles

In hairstyling, the term “oblong” refers to an oval shape, which means your style will have a fair bit of length and is curved to create the desired oblong look. An oblong hairstyle requires a medium to long length of hair — anything past a bob cut and you can achieve this chic, curved style; otherwise you’d end up with more of a rounded shape. So as long as you have a bit of length to your locks, you can create this chic hairstyle for yourself with the right styling techniques and tools.

Hair Pouf

A hair pouf style is flirty and fun, creating a really defined oblong shape with the roundness up top. Blow-dry and flat-iron over your hair first, focusing on the ends of your strands, curving the hair under slightly. Pull up a section on top of your head, from temple to temple — or a bit more if you’d prefer a larger pouf — and tease around the roots of the hair to build up some volume. Rake over the top of the section with your fingers to smooth out any fri y pieces before pinning the hair in place against the top of your head.

Curved Under

If your hair is longer with layers in it, you can form an oblong shape simply by using your flat iron to curve the hair under at the ends. This also gives you lots of volume and creates definition, showing off the different lengths of your layers. Flat-iron over the top section of your hair first to smooth it out. Then work around the ends of your hair in sections, rolling the straightener slightly at the ends to create that curved-under effect. A quick misting with a lightweight hairspray helps keep the hair from falling back.

Pinned Up

With medium to long hair, simply pulling up a section of hair and pinning it to the side of your head can help you to create a glam, oblong-shaped hairstyle. Blow-dry your hair smooth then go over it with a flat iron. Part your hair slightly off-center and run some smoothing serum over your strands to keep down any flyaway hairs. Pull up a small section of hair on one side and use a bobby pin to secure it. The hair lies flat against your head so you still keep that obvious oblong shape, but it adds a little pi a by pulling your hair out of your face. For an elegant look, opt for a really sparkly, glam barrette in place of a bobby pin.

Soft Waves

You don’t have to always stick with a straight style in order to create an oblong shape. Adding soft waves into your medium to long hair enables you to create the same silhouette in your hair. Use a large-barrel curling iron to create large, loose curls, working in sections that are about the same si e as the barrel of the curling iron. Only curl down the length of each section, leaving the very ends loose. After all of the curls are added, use a flat iron to slightly curve the ends under.
