How to Get Curly Hair Straight

If you have curly hair, chances are you fantasize about having straight hair, at least some of the time. Getting very curly hair completely straight can be a chore, but in almost all cases it is possible. By following a few style steps and using the right styling tools, you’ll be on your way to smooth hair. This process will go quicker if you have someone to help you, especially if your hair is thick.
Instructions

  • 1
  • Wash your hair as usual, but apply a conditioner afterward. Use a wide-toothed comb or pick to distribute the conditioner throughout your hair. Rinse the conditioner out.
  •   2
  • Towel-dry hair, comb it out once more and then shake it out by throwing your head down and up. This loosens the hair at your scalp and aids the drying process.
  •   3
  • Wrap hair in a towel and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Don’t blow-dry soaking wet hair. Your hair will frizz less if you start blow-drying it after it has started air-drying.
  • 4
  • After you have let your hair air-dry some, smooth in a small amount of anti-frizz serum or straightening balm. For long hair, a dime-sized amount will suffice; short hair requires considerably less. Start at the nape of your neck and smooth the hair down. Use the excess serum or balm left over on your hands for the roots and top of your head. Don’t use too much on the roots, otherwise your hair may look greasy.
  • 5
  • Begin to blow-dry your hair using the round brush. Dry your hair in small sections, starting at the bottom and working your way to the top until the hair is completely dry. Pull the hair taut with the brush while directing air on the hair. If your hair is extremely curly, you’ll likely have a puffy mane once you’ve finished blow-drying. The flat iron will fix this.
  •   6
  • Spray a light mist of heat protecting spray over dried hair. Working in very small sections, smooth the hair out slowly with the flat iron. Go slowly and apply even pressure to all sections. Be patient during this step and repeat the process as necessary over extremely difficult sections. Once you’ve completed your whole head with the flat iron, add another small amount of frizz serum (less than before) to finished hair. This will help combat any humidity you might encounter and will make the hair extra shiny.
