Tech Talk: Facebook Partners With Save.Org to Use Social Media to Prevent Suicide

Facebook is partnering with suicide prevention organization Save.org to analyze suicide warning signs on social networks. In the wake of internet activist Aaron Schwartz’s suicide on January 11, this issue has been in the spotlight and many are trying to figure out how to help those who are considering suicide.

The partnership will take about a year to analyze the Facebook posts of 20 people in Minnesota who recently committed suicide, and will look for warning signs and patterns that can help detect if someone is contemplating suicide, according to Mashable.

“Friends sometimes don’t ask important questions for fear of being invasive,” Dan Reidenberg, executive director of Save, told Bloomberg. He is also a psychologist who serves as managing director of the National Council for Suicide Prevention. “If we can see what’s happening, we can train people to look for it.”
