The Best Lip Looks From the SAGs...and How to Get Them

Claire Danes. Would you believe me if I told you that the most buzzed-about lips of the night weren’t even topped with lipstick? Well, turns out makeup artist Matin Maulawizada didn’t break out a tube of lipstick on the Homeland star. “Just 2 lip pencils,” he wrote on Instagram. “Coffee bean and deep wine.” Coffee Bean and Deep Wine refer to the shade names of the Laura Mercier Lip Pencils that Maulawizada, the artistry director for the brand, mixed together.

Michelle Dockery. Makeup artist Jordan Long skipped lip liner and instead used Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Lip Colour in L’Exquise “like a stain,” smudging it all over Dockery’s lips with a brush. Her efforts weren’t in vain, either. You truly got a wine-stained effect when she appeared on camera.

Jennifer Lawrence. For Lawrence, who won the SAG Award for best actress in a leading role, makeup artist Jillian Dempsey used a mix of lip colors from Clovis by Delux Beauty. Though the makeup line is no longer available, Dempsey recommends the M.A.C. Pro Lip Palette in Editorial Reds to recreate a shade similar to the custom blend. And if you want to use just one tube and be done with it, I did some searching and found a close match: Rouge Dior Lip Color in Favori Red 752.

Anne Hathaway. Ever since Hathaway started rocking the gamine cut, she’s been playing up her lips on the red carpet. This time around, her makeup artist, Kate Lee, wanted to use a hue a few shades more intense than her natural lip color (when they’re at their reddest). She settled on Chanel Rouge Coco Hydrating Créme Lipstick in Taffeta Rose, a deep rosy-raspberry shade.

January Jones. I may not have been a fan of Jones’s hair, which was a bit severe, but I absolutely loved her makeup when I saw it up close. The lipstick is painted on so perfectly, and it’s such an interesting shade of red. Verging on terra-cotta, the exact product makeup artist Rachel Goodwin broke out for the occasion was Chanel Rouge Allure Lip Colour in Incandenscente, described as a “red with warm undertones.”

Naomi Watts. With Veronica Lake–inspired hair and bold lips, makeup artist Pati Dubroff updated the ’40s beauty look by substituting a punchy pink shade for classic red. She used both a lip pencil (Chanel Lip Definer in Rouge Profond) and a velvet-finish lipstick (Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Lip Colour in La Sensuelle). She applied a stain of the lipstick, sharpened the edges of Watts’s mouth with the pencil, and finished with another coat of the lipstick so the lips looked “lush and matte.”
